the Pioneer 10 and 11 missions in 1972 and the Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft in 1977. Reaching Jupiter in 1974 and 1975, the Pioneer made numerous discoveries about the planetΓÇÖs magnetic field and took a few photographs. The most spec- tacular photography, however, came from the Voyager flybys, which reached Jupiter in March and July of 1979. These spaceships returned some of the most beautiful and scientifically important images in the history of the study of the solar system. Among other things, Voyager provided the first detailed images of the Galilean satellites, including photographs of the first active volcano (on Io) found anywhere in the solar system other than Earth.
